Teenager boxes clever to help flood victims

A TEENAGER has worked tirelessly to send emergency food supplies to help those suffering from the floods in Pakistan.

Maryam Rahim has spent the last couple of weeks organising 125 boxes to be sent out to Pakistan.

And it all comes as Muslims are refraining from eating during sunlight as Ramadan takes place.

The 17-year-old from Festing Grove in Southsea contacted everyone associated with the Wessex Jamaat mosque in Wickham Road, Fareham who offered their support by making up their own boxes or donating money. Items such as biscuits, milk, water, juice, crisps, chocolate and energy tablets are on their way to Pakistan to help the millions of people suffering from the impact of the devastating floods. Each box will feed a family of four for up to three days.

Maryam, said she wanted to do something to help.

'Seeing all the pictures and the people just waiting around aimlessly, I thought it would be a good opportunity to help them and give them what they needed,' she said.

'Especially because we are in fasting month and we try to help others.'

Volunteers got together from around the area spent hours filling the boxes, with children as young as five helping out.

More than 1,600 people have died in the floods and 17 million affected.

'I thought this would be one way of showing our love to our brothers and sisters who are suffering,' added Maryam.

'We want to give them the energy and food that might last them a long time.

'A big thanks to the community for their generosity. Everyone got together to help.

'The response from the community has been tremendous. It has been an eye opener for everyone in the community.

'I didn't know how serious it was until further reports came through.

'I thought it could have been us in that place and how would we feel?

'Many people are homeless and they don't know what to do.

'This little box could bring them some happiness and a smile on their faces.'
