Tenants have council rent hike cut by a half
COUNCIL tenants have had their rent increases halved in a bid to reduce the bills for council residents in Fareham.
Fareham Borough councillors voted on a proposal at a full council meeting.
It means the six per cent increase for 2009/10 which was set earlier in the year will now be halved.
The agreement will cost the council 250,000 and it means residents will get a rebate and face smaller bills for the rest of the year.
It will involve paying tenants back the money paid at a higher rate of increase on bills from April up till now, as well as money the council would no longer get from future rent bills.
Council leader Sean Woodward proposed the change to help people during today's hard financial times.
He said: 'Everybody will now be rebated. I am sure we will have 2,000 residents who will be delighted.'
Around 2,000 council households are set to benefit from the changes.
