Theft motive in Southsea attack on man

A man was kicked and stamped on in what police say was an attempted robbery.

A 23-year-old man was attacked in St Pauls Road at the junction with St Pauls Square in Southsea.

The victim suffered a broken jaw in two places, and required surgery at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

The incident at 11.35pm on Saturday was witnessed by a taxi driver who intervened, causing the offender to run away down St Pauls Road.

Police believe it was an attempted robbery but nothing was stolen.

Officers now want to trace the attacker who is described as white, 19 to 21, about 5ft 10ins, of medium build, with short dark hair and was wearing light blue shorts and a light blue coloured hooded top.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information should contact Detective Constable Tony Flannagan on 0845 045 45 45, or call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
