There's no trick, Roy's a top magician

A magician who had more than one trick up his sleeve has scooped an accolade for his work.

Roy Charles, who has been a magician for 26 years, dazzled crowds and judges at the Portsmouth and District Magic Circle's annual competition, taking home The Will Ayling Cup.

With his close-up magic tricks of cards, ropes and one-liner jokes, the 44-year-old entertained and amazed at the show at Buckland Community Centre, Malins Road, Portsmouth.

And although he is a top-class act, this is the first time he has entered the annual competition.

Roy, of The Hillway, Portchester, said: 'All of the magicians who entered were really good so I was so pleased so win.

'I have never entered before because of work commitments but it was good fun.'

Roy tours the length and breadth of the country with his work which sees him performing at children's parties, church halls, private functions and even army barracks.

He added: 'I love to be entertaining. Everyone loves magic. It is nice to be able to put a smile on people's faces, especially during these times.'

The Portsmouth and District Magic Circle competition has been running since 1994 and is getting bigger by the year.

This year saw about 50 people come to watch the show.

Sean Lobban, organiser of the competition, said: 'There were six magicians competing and it was a very high standard.

'Roy had a good mix of good quality magic and a good performance and he used comedy very well. He is known in the industry as being a very good comedy magician and used his skills to good effect.

'The audience came away feeling entertained because they had seen things they couldn't explain.'

The 43-year-old added: 'If you look at TV you will see magicians from David Blaine to Derren Brown, there is still a wide appeal for it.

'People like to be amazed it is as simple as that. Everyone needs entertaining, especially in times like this.'
