‘This rainy weather is here to stay’

FLOODING may become more common in rural areas in the future, an expert has warned.

Lorraine Brown, chairwoman of the Environment Agency’s Southern Region Flood and Coastal Committee, said: ‘East Hampshire and Sussex haven’t been hit as badly as some places, but they could be in future.

‘Changing weather patterns mean this weather is here to stay and rain is going to be much heavier.

‘Flooding is also probably here to stay and, although we can’t eliminate all the risk, we can minimise the impact.

‘Apart from the distress it causes, there is a huge economic impact and the government is taking it very seriously.’

Across the south region about £65m is expected to be spent this year improving flood defences.
