Traders urged to get wiseover bags
SUPERMARKETS could be asked to use compostable carrier bags in a litter-busting green move.
Some councils are calling for a complete ban on bags but Fareham councillors want traders to swap non-biodegradable bags for more environmentally-friendly ones that break down.
Lib Dem environment spokesman Jim Forrest, who put the motion forward at a council meeting, said: 'I know some areas are calling for a complete ban but it has been going on for so many years that we think it would just be impossible.
'These bags would break down quite quickly and so would combat the problems of litter and waste disposal.'
Councillors are calling for talks with supermarkets and traders in a bid to encourage them to change the bags they use.
Cllr Forrest added: 'I don't think there would be a huge cost implication and I think it would make all the difference.'
The motion was put forward at a meeting of the full council and will now go to the ruling executive for a decision.
