Trails of explosives give bomb disposal experts very busy time
BOMB disposal experts from Portsmouth tackled explosives from Havant to the North Sea in a recent busy week.
The Horsea Island-based navy team covered hundreds of miles to deal with 15 Second World War explosives.
On a Monday early this month the duty watch from Southern Diving Unit 2 was called to deal with two anti-aircraft shells at an aggregate yard in Havant.
Three hours later, they were called to Marchwood, near Southampton, where another high explosive shell had been found.
At the end of the day they were called to deal with a high explosive on the beach at Herne Bay in Kent.
Having detonated it the following day, they were called immediately to Southend-on-Sea in Essex.
There a bait digger had uncovered a high explosive projectile, probably fired by British defences into the Thames Estuary during the Blitz raids by German bombers.
The beach was cordoned off and evacuated while the shell was detonated on the Wednesday.
As they were about to head home on the Thursday, the team were told about several more ordnance items uncovered by bait diggers which were detonated in a controlled explosion.
