Truck driver smashes through Bedhampton level crossing gate
This was the scene when a lorry driver tried to jump a level crossing.
The driver smashed through the gates at Bedhampton railway crossing at midday yesterday, leaving the gate strewn across the line.
Fortunately the driver of the oncoming train was alerted in time to stop before it reached the level crossing.
Jon Murray was cycling over the footbridge just after the accident happened.
The 43-year-old, from Widley, said: 'When I arrived there were lots of people standing around shaking their heads in disbelief.
'The driver had gone through both gates. The warning light flashes quite some time before the gates are lowered so that's probably why they were able to stop the train in time.'
Trains running through Bedhampton were cancelled between midday and 1pm while engineers fixed the gate.
Trains were running normally again by 2.40pm. No one was arrested.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: 'This type of irresponsible behaviour has the potential for massive damage, disruption and could result in death or serious injury.'
