Tuition fees should rise to £5,000, says vice-chancellor
The man in charge of the University of Portsmouth says student fees should be increased to £5,000 a year.
A survey showed two thirds of vice-chancellors wanted to increase annual tuition fees from 3,300 to between 4,000 and 20,000 to compete with universities in other countries.
The University of Portsmouth's vice chancellor, Professor John Craven, would support an increase to 5,000 but a rise to 10,000 or more would be unreasonable.
He said: 'There's a good reason for suggesting a relatively modest rise to about 5,000. It would worry me if it was much bigger than that.
'We've not seen a drop off in students since tuition fees were introduced. In fact here we've seen a large rise in demand. But there comes a point when some students will say it's not worth it.'
The National Union of Students has warned of debts of 32,000 for students if fees rise to 7,000 per year.
Steve Topazio, education officer for the University of Portsmouth Students' Union, said: 'In an ideal world no student would have to pay fees to come to university.
'We understand that opposing tuition fees is a fight that is in the past and that now all our efforts must be put into opposing plans to raise the current cap of 3,300.'
