A SHEDFUL of turkeys were helped to safety as firefighters battled a blaze on a farm.
Around 250 birds were moved from the shed after fire spread from the workshop ablaze next door.
Fire engines were initially called to deal with the fire in the workshop on the farm at Colemore, north of Petersfield, at 7am yesterday.
They worked quickly to contain the flames and stop it spreading to the surrounding buildings.
The 25m by 25m timber workshop was destroyed by the fire, while the turkey shed suffered only slight damage.
A farm vehicle was also destroyed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Brian Rudman, group manager from Hampshire Fire and Rescue service, said: ‘The fire appears to have started in the workshop, which was flanked by other buildings.
‘Our crews did extremely well in stopping the fire spreading to the other buildings.
‘Our animal rescue specialist and firefighters helped the farm hands in herding the turkeys to a safe building and all the birds survived.’
Several fire crews, including Petersfield, tackled the blaze, which was out by 10.10am.
