POLICE cordoned off an area outside a University of Portsmouth building following an assault overnight in which a Havant man suffered a serious head injury.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Police arrested the men aged 20 and 19, from Kent after receiving a report of an injured man on the pavement in Middle Street, in front of the University of Portsmouth’s Eldon Building.

The 22-year-old man from Havant was taken to Southampton General Hospital with a serious head injury.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said the call was received just before 1.40am.

The spokesman said: ‘Two men aged 20 and 19 from Kent have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and are helping police with their enquiries.’

Police later cordoned off an area in front of the main entrance to the Eldon Building, which was in force until 10.30am.

A University spokeswoman said staff who worked in the Eldon Building were told to keep away from the building’s front entrance while the police investigation was going on.

She said: ‘We heard there was an an assault in front of the building sometime last night.

‘Police were there collecting evidence.

‘Staff were told not to use the front entrance of the building when they came in this morning.’

A staff member who worked in the building said: ‘We heard there was a fight in the street overnight.’

A security guard who was standing nearby added: ‘There were three or four police there before because, I think, something happened last night.’
