Two men hurt in attacks just hours apart

A man was taken to hospital after being assaulted in a street fight – one of two attacks over the weekend in Gosport.

The man, who had serious cuts to his arm, was one of about 10 people involved in the fight at Yewside, Holbrook, at 2.30am yesterday.

Police have arrested one man on suspicion of assault but further details of what happened are not yet known.

Concerned neighbours called police after they had woken to shouting coming from the group outside their homes.

Jean Foster, who lives in the street, said: 'There was an awful lot of noise. I went upstairs at about 2.30am and someone was being helped away.

'It was just a lot of noise and it went on for quite a long time. There was a group of lads outside but I didn't really see anything.'

Police cordoned off the area where the assault took place and blood could be seen on the ground.

Officers made house-to-house enquiries on Sunday afternoon to try to piece together what had happened, and are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Sergeant Steve Spencer, from Gosport CID, said: 'There was a group of young people, and one man, probably in his 20s, had a laceration to his arm. We don't think a weapon was involved.'

Eighteen hours earlier another man was taken to hospital after an unprovoked attack on Saturday morning.

The man was walking along the cycle path under the bridge of Anns Hill Road, Gosport, at 8am when he was approached by another man who started shouting abuse at him.

The attacker then began to punch and kick him, causing bruising, sore ribs and facial injuries.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, then made his way to a nearby house, where he called an ambulance. He was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, for treatment to his injuries, which were not serious.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw anything to come forward.

The attacker is white, and wore a black-and-white top and blue jeans.

No further details are known.
