SAILORS on Portsmouth-based HMS Dauntless were given a warm welcome this weekend as they visited their affiliated city.
The Type 45 destroyer and her 150-man crew are in the middle of a visit to Newcastle.
The crew of the 7,300-ton ship paraded around Newcastle and welcomed local people on to the impressive warship for free tours.
Officially welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, sailors were left to mingle with local Tynesiders having already paid visits to local charities and schools.
Commander Adrian Fryer, the commanding officer of HMS Dauntless, said: ‘It is a real pleasure to be able to bring such an advanced warship home to interact with locals, our friends and affiliates in the area.
‘It is a true honour that we have been invited to parade through the streets of Newcastle.’
HMS Dauntless joined the fleet in 2010, and spent its maiden voyage touring the Atlantic.
Having trained more than 600 foreign military personnel and played host to 4,000 diplomatic guests, HMS Dauntless will be commissioned into the Royal Navy on June 3 in Portsmouth. The most powerful destroyer ever built in Britain, HMS Dauntless has a range of 7,000 nautical miles and is 150 metres long.
