TARGET Ukip is aiming its sights at Portsmouth South in the 2015 general election

PORTSMOUTH South has been announced as a target seat for Ukip in the 2015 general election, according to reports.

The constituency, currently held by independent Mike Hancock MP, was named in a report in The Observer as being a target for the party.

It comes as the local election results saw the Liberal Democrats lose control of Portsmouth City Council.

Cllr Ray Finch is leader of Hampshire Ukip.

He said: ‘I don’t know what the list of target seats actually is.

‘However, I would say that all of Portsmouth is natural for Ukip.

‘All of Portsmouth would be an obvious target.

‘If I were to make the list I would certainly put Portsmouth on it.

‘It’s a nexus of support and activity.’

Ukip’s candidate for the seat, Douglas Denny, was a Conservative councillor for Milton between 1982 and 1986.

Cllr Finch added the surrounding area. including Gosport, Havant and Fareham, has shown support for Ukip.

As reported, two Ukip councillors were elected to Havant Borough Council, one to Gosport Borough Council and another to Fareham Borough Council.

Six Ukip councillors caused major upset after they were elected to Portsmouth City council, including Cllr Julie Swan who ousted Mr Hancock.

Mr Hancock was suspended from the Lib-Dems after a report alleging sexual misconduct toward a female constituent was leaked. He denies the claims.
