LIVES will be lost if coastguard stations continue to lose experienced staff, the Public and Commercial Services union is warning.
It says that the government is failing to retain staff after its flawed decision to close half the coastguard stations in the UK.
And according to the union, UK stations are almost 90 watchkeepers down.
The government has faced criticism over its plans from the transport select committee and had pledged that no station would close before the new national operations centre, based at Kite’s Croft business park in Titchfield Common, was up and running.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: ‘We and others have warned time and again that these closures would put lives at risk. The government must act immediately to address this dangerous decline.’
