Unsung heroes who go beyond the call of duty

It's the moment we've all been waiting for – now's the time to announce the shortlists for our Best of Health Awards 2010.

We asked you to nominate NHS staff and volunteers who have stood out in the care they gave or have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

And you answered us in your hundreds, singing the praises of everyone from hospital doctors and nurses, and GP practices and dental surgeries, to mental health care workers and the volunteers who support our health service.

The stroke rehabilitation team and respiratory team at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, were nominated for Hospital Team of the Year; Cowplain Family Practice for GP practice of the year; the Basics charity which provides voluntary doctors to assist at emergency incidents for the Unsung Heroes award; and the West Street Dental Clinic in Fareham was nominated for Best Dental Practice of the Year – to name but a few.

The awards, which are sponsored by The Coast, were launched in May with the intention of giving NHS staff and volunteers the recognition they deserve.

Bob Hoad, managing director of The Coast, says: 'The role of those involved in our health sectors is often not appreciated until you need their help. Every day there are hundreds of unsung heroes delivering care, advice and medical attention, making them the most deserving people in our communities.

'These awards will acknowledge the great work they do by celebrating the outstanding contribution they make to our lives.'

So here are the shortlists for all 11 categories.

Our winners will be announced during a glitzy ceremony at the Guildhall in Portsmouth on Friday, September 24. And we're hoping as many of you as possible will join us to celebrate the achievements of those who make the health service what it is.
