Village carnival parade marks 130th birthday
A carnival's organisers are asking the thousands who come to this weekend's event to buy their goodies from official staff so they can put more back into the community.
The Titchfield Bonfire Boys Society will have its own merchandise sellers at Sunday's Titchfield Carnival for the first time in a bid to boost its coffers.
The society will be able to plough the money back into next year's event and into the good causes it traditionally supports around the area. The historic carnival celebrates its 130th birthday this year.
Society chairman Mark Hussey said: 'We worked it out, and the average amount that each person gives to the actual carnival is less than 20p a head.
'If we could get that up to 1 then it would make the carnival practically self-sufficient and we would have a lot more money to play with.'
Official sellers will be in bright green T-shirts.
The procession will feature about 30 floats from community groups and will be joined by classic cars, steam engines and marching bands.
Last year the procession's route was altered to keep it within the village without heading on to the busy A27, and this year will be sticking to the same plan.
There will also not be a fun fair on the recreation ground - a fixture of previous years.
Mr Hussey added: 'Bringing it all within the village makes it all that much affordable and we can spend the money that would have otherwise gone on marshals and policing on the things that make the day more fun.'
The fun will start at 3pm in The Square when special guest Geoff Holt, who became the first quadriplegic to sail single-handed across the Atlantic, opens the carnival.
Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Brian Bayford, will then crown the carnival queen, Rachel Nash, before the first procession of the day. Another procession takes place at 6.30pm.
And revellers are being warned that police will use powers to seize booze being drunk on the street.
'We want this to be a family event - somewhere that's comfortable for them to come along to,' said Mr Hussey.
The processions start from Bellfield, down Coach Hill, through South Street, the Square, East Street to the Tanneries and then go back.
