VOTERS will today decide who will watch over police in Hampshire as the first ever police and crime commissioner.
The public will take to the ballot boxes to elect one of the six candidates to take on the role and responsibilty for all major decision making about policing in our area.
Currently these decisions, which include all budgetary decisions, are made by the 17 members of Hampshire Police Authority.
Instead of decisions on issues such as the council tax precept for policing being taken by committee, the final decision will rest with one person.
Voters in Hampshire can choose between independent candidates Simon Hayes or Don Jerrard, Labour candidate Jacqui Rayment, Tory candidate Michael Mates, Lib Dem candidate David Goodall, or UKIP candidate Stephen West.
Whoever is elected will take office on November 22.
The radical shake-up of the service will see PCCs elected in each of England and Wales’ 41 police areas outside of London where the Lord Mayor Boris Johnson will take on PCC responsibilities in relation to The Met.
