Warning issued after heavy rain hits Hampshire

WET Heavy rain has hit Hampshire overnight

WET Heavy rain has hit Hampshire overnight

DRIVERS are being urged to take extra care this morning after a night of heavy rain and strong winds.

Many roads have lots of standing water and police say drivers should be vigilant and reduce their speed.

There is currently flooding on the A27 eastbound between the A259 near Chichester and the B2144.

Gusts of up to 75mph were recorded on the Isle of Wight last night, but there have been no major incidents in the Portsmouth area.

Today the winds are set to be very light, but the stormy weather will return tomorrow night with gusts of up to 40mph in Portsmouth and heavy rain.

The areas worst affected by the heavy downpours were Wales and south-west England, with one man dying after becoming trapped in his car in flood water in Somerset.

A spokesman for weather forecasters MeteoGroup said: ‘There will be some respite today, a little chilly with some sunshine and short showers but nothing like yesterday.

‘The rain should have cleared but might linger in the south.

‘But again on Saturday it will get quite stormy overnight for all of the UK, with a particular risk of high winds in the southern half of the UK.

‘There will be high rainfall totals and further flooding.’
