Warning over size of navy

THE government has cut back too far on the number of Royal Navy destroyers and frigates, the former head of the armed forces has warned.

Admiral Lord Boyce, who was chief of the defence staff from 2001 to 2003, pointed to threats posed by piracy and Iran to urge a rethink of the cuts made in 2010.

He said: ‘The navy has been unable to meet its full-time commitments for a duty ship over the past few months and noting such other contingencies coming up such as the potential closure of the Hormuz Straits by Iran, will the government now recognise that it has cut back too far on the size of the destroyer fleet force?’

Defence minister Lord Howell said the matter was kept under ‘constant review’.

He added: ‘We need to deploy the forces our resources allow to deploy in the most effective manner.’

The government will not recognize it has cut back too far till it is staring down a gun barrel then and only then government will look for blame and escapism.
