Westbury Manor Museum under investigation for paranormal beings

Ghost hunters will be carrying out an investigation into things that go bump in the night at a museum.

Paranormal experts will bring along cameras, tape recorders and all manner of specialist equipment when they visit Westbury Manor Museum in Fareham tonight.

Staff at the museum have experienced something brushing past, or bumping into them when they are alone in the room.

Others have reported hearing someone talking to them.

And items on display are also reported to have been moved around by mischievous spirits.

Tom de Wit, the museum's curator, said: 'There have been a number of things reported over the years, which some people have found alarming and which have not been explained.'

The main building as it stands today is 230 years old, but there was a farmhouse on the site dating back to the 17th century.

It has also served as council offices and was left empty for 16 years before becoming Fareham's main museum in 1990.

Mr De Wit added: 'There are so many stories the walls and these things could tell – if such things exist anywhere, then I'd be surprised if there is not something here.

'The best thing will be if we discover something that sheds new light on the history of the building and the people who have lived on this site or leads to something we had no idea about.'

The investigation will be carried out by a team from Raven's Wing – a Hampshire-based team of paranormal investigators.

Team member Claire Smith said: 'We do not creep about in the dark.

'We have the lights on and we use a lot of technical monitoring equipment.

'In fact, we are quite noisy sometimes as this can attract paranormal activity more than sitting silently.'

The team will carry out the investigation from into the early hours of Saturday morning and the museum will keep a record of the findings.

Mr de Wit added: 'I am interested to see what the team discovers. But as the last person in the buildings on many dark nights, I hope the team don't find anything too alarming!'
