A NEWLY-qualified navy diver has followed in his father’s footsteps into the armed forces.
Able Seaman Diver Liam Boardman, 25, from Wickham, has completed specialist clearance diver training at the Defence Diving School (DDS) in Portsmouth.
He received his certificate and diving log from guest of honour Commodore Mike Mansergh, commodore of the Maritime Warfare School. His father George is also in the navy, currently serving as a divisional officer in Victory Squadron at HMS Collingwood in Fareham where AS Boardman lived and was looked after with his fellow trainee divers during his course.
He said: ‘This was one of the hardest things I have done, but it feels good finishing now.’
Cdre Mansergh said of the newly qualified divers: ‘They are trained and ready now to do operational jobs.
‘To achieve all that they have done over 24 weeks is hugely important and a wonderful achievement that they should be hugely proud of.’
Navy divers are currently serving in Afghanistan, based at Camp Bastion, where they are working in support of the British army’s Royal Engineer Field Squadrons.
