Woman, 22, made false claim she was robbed

A WOMAN has been arrested and cautioned by police for making up a robbery.

The 22-year-old told police she had been robbed in Isambard Brunel Road, Portsmouth.

The woman claimed that three youths had approached her and stole her bag and mobile phone.

But the police officer investigating quickly discovered that the woman had in fact sold the phone just before reporting the robbery.

Detective Constable Jim Garrett said: ‘This woman was arrested for making a false statement to police and spent several hours in custody.

‘Reducing robbery is a priority for Hampshire Constabulary, and as such any report will be treated seriously and a thorough investigation conducted.

‘Unfortunately when false reports are made they will inevitably take police away from investigating genuine crimes.’

The woman, from the Havant area, was given a caution for making a false statement to police.
