You'll be remembered for ever
THE sacrifices made by men and women from all the services are being honoured in the first Armed Forces Day.
Today service personnel past and present were thanked for their role in protecting the UK over the years.
Flags have been raised across the country and special commemorative posters have been proudly displayed in windows.
One of those who stuck up the poster – printed in yesterday's News – was Normandy veteran Frank Rosier.
Mr Rosier is secretary of the Portsmouth Normandy Veterans' Association and recently returned home to Greenfield Crescent, Water- looville, from an emotional pilgrimage to Normandy to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
He said: 'Yes, I have put my poster up. It's an important day, and it's nice to have a day when we remember.
'But we must remember for the rest of the year too.'
The Armed Forces Day celebrations began on Monday when the official flags were raised above town halls across the area.
Troops paraded through Rowlands Castle today and tomorrow there will be a memorial service from 10.30am at Ann's Hill Cemetery in Gosport which will include a fly-past of a Second World War Dakota plane at 11am.
Big celebrations will also be held in Portsmouth next weekend when the Parachute Regiment Association and Airborne Forces Association put on a spectacle at Southsea Common.
The Red Devils will make an appearance and there will be free entry to the D-Day Museum on Sunday, July 5.
Model makers from the Surface Warship Association will be mounting a display of highly detailed model ships. These will include three huge models each around 6ft in length.
Other models on display will include warships and tanks from the Second World War and wartime periods.
In addition, veterans from the Portsmouth branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association will be at the museum to talk to visitors about their wartime experiences.
