You thought he couldn't be noisier? Now Pompey fan eyes up vuvuzela...

Pompey's most famous fan has swapped his bell and bugle for a vuvuzela as he gets into the spirit of South Africa 2010.

John Westwood is used to being the loudest fan in the ground whenever he goes to the football.

So the bookshop owner had a go at blowing the South African horn which has been causing such a stir at this summer's World Cup.

Many players and commentators have called for the musical instrument to be banned from stadiums at the competition. But after giving it a go John says he expects to see the vuvuzela at football grounds next year - including at Fratton Park.

Speaking to The News, John said: 'It's a lot more difficult to play and it's difficult to control the sound but it's great. It's great to embrace the culture of South Africa for the World Cup, like we did with the Mexican waves for Mexico and ticker-tape for Argentina.'

The sound of the plastic horn has been likened to the drone of thousands of bees and several players, including Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, have said the noise is affecting their concentration.

But John thinks we should all embrace the vuvuzela.

'We should be encouraging anything that improves the atmosphere at the grounds,' he said. The atmosphere in Premier League games can be so sanitised now.

'I'm sure we will have a few vuvuzelas at Fratton Park next season - I can't wait.

'I do the bell and bugle but a couple of my mates have already ordered some vuvuzelas so I will definitely have a go. I managed to get a sort of tune out of it so hopefully I will get better.'

And John called on fans at Fratton Park to create a great atmosphere for the club's return to the Championship.

He said: 'The sound of vuvuzelas will intimidate opposing teams. I can't wait for next season. I'm so proud to be part of Portsmouth Football Club. There's no other club in the country whose fans would have got behind the club like Pompey fans did last season.'
