Young offenders brush up well for graffiti work

They were repaying their debt to society by doing jobs that people have said they want doing.

A team of offenders spent Saturday painting over huge swathes of graffiti which had been sprayed on a wall next to Milton Park Junior School, Perth Road, Eastney, Portsmouth.

The day of hard graft is part of the 'citizen panel scheme' being tried out in Hampshire and five other areas of the country.

The idea is to get people on community punishment orders to carry out tasks which need to be done.

Barrie Crook, chief officer of the Hampshire Probation Area, said such work could achieve a lot for communities and reduce fear of crime.

'This is our aim – for offenders to visibly give something back to the communities where they committed crimes,' he said.
