Young commandos in action

YOUNGSTERS became commandos for the day as a fort put on an military extravaganza.

Children tried out a junior assault course and a foam-dart shooting range as Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill threw open its doors for the Bank Holiday Monday.

There was also a climbing wall for kids to scale, and the chance to watch a Second World War armoured vehicle roar into life.

Uniformed gunners were also on hand to demonstrate their firing skills and show off their old weapons.

Fort operations manager Mark Selwood said: 'Our Commando Kids days are great entertainment for kids of all ages and an ideal way for them to let off steam.

'One of the highlights was undoubtedly the mighty 26-ton Sexton armoured vehicle, which never fails to impress as it roars and clunks its way around the arena.'

To round off the summer holidays, Fort Nelson is putting on a Battle of Britain event on Thursday to mark its 70th anniversary.

Young and old can train to become a pilot and discover RAF tactics. Tickets cost 1 for adults, 2.50 kids, or 5 for two adults and two children.
