Sara Pollard, director of Free From Temptation, confronts the question ‘what is love?’ and talks about what the emotion means to her
It was a post I’d shared with friends and family exactly a year ago today. The post was about the phrase ‘True love should be like it is in the movies’.
It reminded me of my younger self. I was constantly convinced I was in love and that each new relationship was ‘the one’.
Since I was a child I dreamt of love like that which I saw in the movies.
I believed the fiction portraying love as passionate, daring and dramatic.
I missed out on so much of my adolescent years, in constant denial thinking, ‘Is this it?
‘Is this how it feels?’
But as each relationship ended I realised I was more infatuated than in love.
In reality I was in love with the idea of being in love.
It wasn’t until I was older that I discovered what true love felt like.
It wasn’t at all like the movie romance.
I had held out for it and it was better because it was real.
Love isn’t about heartache, healing and fate.
Love is about waking up in the night to feel them holding you.
It’s silly chats at 4am. Love is in that moment, you laugh, you cry, or feel.
Love is endless.
It’s the argument that ends before you go to sleep. It’s what causes the fire inside your soul.
It’s scary, emotional and annoying all rolled into one. It’s driving through the night just to see them for half an hour and it’s the smile that spreads across your face when you receive their text.
Love isn’t at all how it’s made out in the movies.
Love is real.
Love is you.
So don’t be defeated by the things that life will throw at you on a daily basis.
It’s so tempting to want your own happily-ever-after but it’s so rarely seen to turn out that way.
Instead, if you want something in life, then go out there and grab it with both hands.
Live each day as if it was your last.
Never have regrets, for a lack of trying. You can genuinely make anything happen.
You just have to believe.
