A DRIVER managed to escape from her burning car with just seconds to spare.

It was not until passers-by started shouting at the woman as she drove along Purbrook Way, Leigh Park, that she realised smoke was coming out of the bonnet of the Citreon Xsara.

She turned into Park House Farm Way before jumping out and seconds later flames engulfed the vehicle, at 2.30pm today.

Crew manager Peter Yeomans, from Havant fire station, said: ‘It started in the engine and went right the way through the car. Only the boot was untouched.

‘It was well going when we arrived. We put it out and stopped it spreading to other cars.’

Just minutes earlier she was on the A3M motorway. Mr Yeomans said: ‘She was fairly lucky because the car would have stopped at some point.

‘The driver was shaken but fine.’
