TRAFFIC came to a standstill on the M27 after a car was ablaze.

Drivers sat in long tailbacks between junctions 9 and 10 of the westbound carriageway at 3pm today.

A silver BMW had caught on fire, causing all three lanes of the carriageway to be closed for more than an hour.

Two fire engines from Fareham fire station were called out at just after 3pm today.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: ‘We were called to one car that was severely damaged by fire.

‘We used two breathing apparatus and two hose reels to put out the fire.’

No one was injured in the incident.
