People are being warned to check the expiry date on their European Health Insurance Card before they go abroad.

News consumer expert Richard Thomson has warned families that if they do not have a valid insurance card they could be at risk of paying out hundreds for medical bills.

The card gives travellers access to GPs, dentists, and state hospitals in the EU at the same price as locals, and most European health services are free.

Official records indicate that more than five million cards are out of date. Cards can be renewed online promptly without charge by going to the official NHS website ehic.org.uk.
