VISITORS to the Gosport Geology Gallery can get cuddly with its newest exhibit, a giant woolly mammoth.

Museum learning officer Janet Wildman said: ‘The Geology Gallery tells the story of the geology of the Solent area, including the Pleistocene era, more commonly known as the ice age.

‘We are trying to teach people that dinosaurs and mammoths weren’t around at the same time, but mammoths and people were.’

To mark its unveiling today the gallery is putting on a host of geology, biology and archaeology activities – including a competition to name the mammoth.

The mammoth was paid for by the Friends of Gosport Museum.

The free activities run from 10am to 4pm at the Local Studies Centre in High Street, Gosport. Donations welcome.
