A MAN has been arrested and charged with armed robbery after a raid at an off-licence in Portsmouth.

Anthony John Higson, 28, of no fixed abode, is accused of attempted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm.

At around 9.20pm on Christmas Eve, a man walked into Grande Wines, in Somers Road, and threatened staff with what appeared to be a hand gun.

Following a struggle, the offender was disarmed by staff and the man ran off empty-handed, as reported in The News.

Higson was arrested on Friday of last week and charged later that day.

He was remanded in custody and appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

He is next due to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on January 17.
