A man died when his BMW hit a tree and caught fire near Goodwood racecourse.

Sussex Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman said: “At 3.30pm on Saturday emergency services were called to Selhurstpark Road, near Goodwood Racecourse, north of Chichester.

“There a BMW M3 car had collided with a tree and caught fire.

“Firefighters put out the fire but sadly the sole occupant of the vehicle, a man, was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The road was closed in both directions and crash investigators are now trying to determine how the collision occurred. The West Sussex coroner has been informed.

“Anyone who saw what happened or the vehicle being driven shortly beforehand is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Ardara.”
