AN ELDERLY man has died in a house fire.

Crews were called to a bungalow in Nicholas Crescent, Fareham, at 7.51am today.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were faced with a severe blaze on the ground floor.

An elderly woman escaped the fire and was taken to hospital. The crews rescued the man but he later died at the scene.

Portchester fire station posted on Twitter: ‘Ground floor and 1st floor heavily smoke logged.’

Investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze but say it is not being treated as suspicious.

Two crews from Fareham and one from Portchester were called to the fire.

The alarm was raised by a smoke detector.

Marjorie Lambert, 70, who lives nearby, said: ‘We saw him being brought out. The whole air smelt of fire.’

Her husband Barry, 71, added: ‘There was a reddy glow and within no time at all the whole living room looked like it was alight.’
