A MAN was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke when his flat caught fire.

The blaze started in the back room of a home in Milton Road, Milton, at around 3am yesterday.

Firefighters from Southsea were sent and managed to put it out within 45 minutes.

Thick black smoke filled the flat and the occupant, who is in his late-20s, was helped from the building.

He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and remained conscious, but was then taken by ambulance to Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire Fire and Rescue are now working together to determine the cause of the fire.
