FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man trapped in mud next to HMS Warrior early today.

The man is believed to have been trying to row to Gosport when his boat overturned, pitching him into the sea and its muddy bed.

Four fire appliances from Cosham and Southsea were called to the scene at just after 4am today.

The man was brought to safety using an inflatable path to shore by 5am.

He was then taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

A spokesman at HMS Warrior said it was understood the man was trying to get across to Gosport in a rowing boat when it overturned.
