MARITIME charity The Sailor’s Society is calling on runners to take part in next year’s London Marathon to raise money for the organisation.

This year £45,000 was raised and the society’s fundraisers are hoping all 30 places will be filled next year with more money being generated.

The society operates in around 100 ports in 30 countries and aims to better the lives of seafarers, who can lead dangerous and lonely lives at sea.

Event fundraiser Felicity Patterson, who will be taking part in the marathon, said: ‘Having attended the London Marathon as a supporter on a number of occasions, I am always filled with admiration by the extent of all the runners’ efforts as well as the fantastic support from the crowd.

‘The event will be even more special as it is the Olympic year and I urge everyone who has ever thought about running it, to sign up.’

All runners are asked to raise a minimum of £1,750 for the charity.
