STAFF at a major hotel chain have raised thousands of pounds to buy specialist outdoor equipment for a school, which supports pupils with health issues.

Staff at the Marriott hotel in Southampton Road stepped away from their daily duties to donate food and run a barbecue for the Friends of Mary Rose Academy’s annual fundraising event.

The academy, in Gisors Road, Southsea, helps students who have severe, profound and complex health issues.

The barbecue raised £912, with staff donating prizes for the raffle, which helped raise £4,335.90. Along with other donations, the grand total was £6,468.54.

General manager Mark Leyland said: ‘This is the seventh year we have donated food and bread as part of our support for the school.

‘We have great affection for the academy and the support it gives children through its fantastic team of staff.’

Executive head at the Mary Rose Academy Alison Beane said: ‘This year’s event broke all previous records so we are absolutely thrilled.’
