Meet Lady of the Dance!

THIS WEEK IN 1993: ‘Despicable’ attack on Armistice Day

An Irish dancer who starred alongside Michael Flatley in Lord of the Dance is bringing the phenomenon to Portsmouth.

Internationally-acclaimed Roisin Mullins will begin dancing classes today in the city after relocating to the south coast.

Miss Mullins, director of Raven Dance Company, hopes to establish a number of Irish Dance classes in Portsmouth and Southsea.

The classes will be open to people of all ages, from beginners to professional standard.

The 26-year-old, who toured the world with Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance Troupe One, is kicking off the Irish Dance action with a series of classes at St Swithun's Roman Catholic Church in Waverley Road, Southsea.

The classes, which begin today, are open to both children and adults.

Miss Mullins said: 'If people come along they will be getting taught by me directly, no matter if they are experienced or a beginner at Irish dancing.

'I think it will be really great. Portsmouth has a large Irish community so hopefully this will be quite popular. It would be good to see some people who have never tried Irish dancing before.'

The Roisin Mullins Dance Academy offers both traditional An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha Irish Dance as well as Michael Flatley show-style Irish Dance.

'I was in Troupe One for a year and went all over the world, which was brilliant,' said Miss Mullins.

'It was an amazing experience, dancing in front of audiences of thousands. It was constantly great fun on tour. There were the dancers and about 60 of the crew guys. We hardly ever slept.

'It was a constant laugh – there are things I could say but I think I would get into trouble!'

Miss Mullins has called on people with no previous experience of Irish Dancing to give it a go.

She said: 'It's something a bit different, it's a great way to exercise and make lots of new friends. We do traditional dancing and show-style dancing, so there is something in there for everybody.

'We will be doing the Michael Flatley stuff, which is quite exciting.'
