LANDLORD Colin Elford has been in the pub trade almost 30 years.

He began collecting glasses and worked his way up to running pubs across London, Southampton and West Sussex.

He took on The Travellers Joy, in Southbourne, with his partner Karen Lambert a year ago. They live at the pub with their two young children, James and Katie.

Mr Elford said: ‘We fancied a change from our pub in Chichester and sent a cheeky letter to Fullers when we heard this was coming up and they said yes.

‘We love it here. The important thing is to take an interest in your customers and give them what they want.

‘If we don’t see someone for a couple of weeks we give them a ring, make sure they’re alright.

‘The role of landlord has changed over the years. We have to really work at getting people in and it’s working.’
