PLANS for a state-of-the-art yacht base in Old Portsmouth will go under the microscope at a public meeting on Monday.

The meeting, to discuss Olympian Ben Ainslie’s proposed America’s Cup base at the Camber Dock, will be at the Royal Naval Club and Royal Albert Yacht Club from 7pm.

Two weeks ago more than 200 residents met at the club to voice their disapproval of the design of the planned base, which would be 25m high and tower above nearby buildings.

Old Portsmouth resident Malcolm Hill is chairman of a newly-formed committee hoping to have the design changed or the site of the base moved to another spot in Portsmouth Harbour.

Mr Hill said he hoped an alternative plan could be worked out.

He said: There is a considerable need to bring the wide gulf in positions together if goodwill is to survive.

‘Hopefully the meeting will result in common sense and compromise for this exciting project in the interest of Ben Ainslie Racing, the Portsmouth community and the country’s pride.’
