Memorial gig will pay tribute to a popular guitarist

HE was a talented guitarist whose love for music rubbed off on his pop star sons.
One of the proudest moments in the late Barry Sutton’s life was seeing his triplets, Ed, Craig and Scott, make it big in 2004 with their boyband, The Noise Next Door.
The triplets went from stacking shelves at Asda in Bedhampton to enjoying a string of hits, including Lock Up Your Daughters and Calendar Girls, although fame was short-lived.
The trio, now 25, will pay an emotional tribute to their father when they play at a gig in memory of him.
Barry, of Lockerley Road, Havant, died last November at the age of 61 following a battle with cancer.
The self-taught lead and bass guitarist played in a variety of bands over five decades, including 5-By-5, Jet, Highway, Mannion and Wickersnead, and Signature.
During his career he backed many artists including The Herd and Picketywitch
Later in life he played in Shadowmania on stage at The Heroes pub in Waterlooville.
The former Shadows bass player, the late Jet Harris, would regularly attend and play alongside Barry.
Barry’s wife Annette said: ‘He was playing from the age of 14 right through until he died.
‘He loved it. He was a young lad in the 60s and as you can imagine, the scene was kicking off. He loved the energy and excitement and wanted to be part of it.’
Barry was a family man, working to support his loved ones by working for Gammon & Smith, the builders’ merchants and later in life as a coach builder.
But family and music always came first.
As well as the triplets, Barry had four daughters, Andrea, Alexandra, Jaime, and Harmonie, who gave him 10 grandchildren.
Mrs Sutton added: ‘He was proud of all his children. The triplets were living his dream. He appeared on telly with them.’
She added they were looking forward to the gig.
‘They wanted to do it for their dad,’ she said.
The memorial gig will feature bands that all have a connection with Barry, whether he played in them or has friends in them. They will be Retromatic, Shadders, The Superheroes, and Daz and Chave.
Doors open for the memorial gig at 7pm on Thursday, March 22 at Leigh Park Working Men’s Club in Dunsbury Way. Tickets are £3 and proceeds go to The Rowans Hospice.
