TWO men had to be rescued after getting stranded on a tidal island in Portsmouth Harbour.

The Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (Gafirs) was called just after midnight this morning after the men got stuck on Burrow Island.

After shouting for help and flashing torches, they were able to get the attention of the MoD police launch the Humphrey Gale but it was unable to get close to the island.

The UK Coastguard paged Gafirs and the lifeboat arrived on scene carrying a specialist rescue sled within eight minutes of launching.

The lifeboat crew were able to recover the two men from Burrow Island directly onto the lifeboat which can operate in shallow water.

The men were taken back to the Gosport Ferry pontoon and were able to make their own way home.
