FIREFIGHTERS were called to help a woman on a mobility scooter that had caught fire.

A passing motorist in Southampton Road, Cosham, near Queen Alexandra Hospital, had spotted flames coming out of the back of the scooter as the elderly lady rode along.

The driver pulled over and put the flames out using dirt.

It happened at around 7.40pm last night.

Two appliances from Cosham fire station were called.

They said the cause was connected to the mobility scooter’s electrical system.

Crew manager Joe Forrest said: ‘He stopped and chucked some dirt on the back of it. We made sure the fire was out.’
