Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt is backing Holocaust Memorial Day 2014.

The annual event, which this year is on Monday, January 27, commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The objective is to provide an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust and Nazi persecution.

Every year the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust chooses a theme to focus on, and this year it is journeys.

In keeping with this theme Ms Mordaunt spoke to Ann Kirk, who escaped Nazi Germany as a child, about her journey to England. Mrs Kirk was sent to the UK from Germany unaccompanied by her parents, their desperate bid for her to escape anti-semitic Nazi Germany. Ann never saw them again.

Speaking of Ann’s remarkable story Ms Mordaunt said: ‘It is a reminder of the importance of commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.’
