THERE was plenty of singing, dancing and a chance to catch up with friends and family as Hindus in Portsmouth celebrated a major festival.

More than 100 people met at the Buckland Community Centre, in Malins Road, Buckland for four nights to celebrate Navratri.

Worshippers took part in a garba and raas-style dancing, accompanied by live music.

Navratri – which means nine nights – is a nine-day festival, where Hindus worship the goddess Durga.

Baku Thaker, of the Portsmouth Navratri Celebration 2011 committee, said: ‘We worship the goddess Durga to give us strength for different challenges in our day-to-day life.’
