FAMILIES spent the day planting seeds and learning about flowers in a bid to spruce up a communal garden.

And their efforts at flats in Wingfield Street, in Portsmouth, won Best Garden at the awards.

Resident Zara Conran and chairman of the residents’ association Gordon Croucher went to the awards on behalf of all the residents.

Zara said: ‘It feels good to have won. The kids had a great day and they loved it.’

Gordon added: ‘We didn’t expect to win at all. It has been a lovely afternoon at the awards.’

Runner-up in Best Garden went to Lorraine Brownsea, from Gosport, who transformed the garden in her flats.
