Fire has caused major damage to a plumbing supplies store in Portsmouth.

Police blocked off Nevil Shute Road on the Airport Industrial Estate after the blaze at the Plumb Center.

The trade centre was severely damaged and two adjoining premises - Red Star Food Services and Breeze Volkswagen Commercial - suffered smoke damage.

But 40 firefighters called to tackle the blaze, which broke out at around 4.40am, prevented it speaeding further in the line of five buildings on the industrial estate.

Crews from Southsea, Cosham, Fareham and Waterlooville tackled the fire, using 10 sets of breathing apparatus and six hosereels.

The fire service environmental protection unit from Romsey was also called as a precaution, although firefighters said no environmental damage was found.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the cause of the fire was being investigated.
