SHOPPERS flocked to the opening of a new charity shop which supports people with life-threatening illnesses.

The Sue Ryder Care store opened its doors to the public in Palmerston Road, Southsea, for the first time yesterday.

Staff were overwhelmed as queues snaked around the block.

People are now being encouraged to donate more stock.

Dave Bennett, retail business manager for Sue Ryder Care, said: ‘It’s been absolutely brilliant and I’d like to thank shoppers for their interest and generosity.

‘We sold so many items in the first day – this is pretty much a record breaker for Sue Ryder shops.

‘I am absolutely delighted that the people of Southsea have given us such a brilliant start. It’s been hard work, but worth it. The shop is amazing and offers an excellent shopping experience. But we need more donated stock and volunteers to be able to keep up the good work.’
